The State Russian Museum is the first and the biggest museum of Russian art and history. The museum was opened in 1898 and named after its founder "The Emperor Museum of the Russian Art named after Alexander III". from 1917 it is called "The State Russian Museum".

The State Russian Museum owns the collection of more than 400000 exhibits. It includes several departments: the Ancient Russian Art (icons and pieces of applied art); the Russian Paintings of 18th - 20th centuries; the Russian sculptures; the Numismatics; the Drawings; the Russian Applied art; the Modern Trends; the Miniatures. It contains works by the greatest Russian artists: Rublev, Brullov, Kiprensky, Repin, Levitan and many others.

The Russian Museum today is a unique depository of artistic treasures, a leading restoration center, an authoritative institute of academic research, a major educational center and the nucleus of a network of national museums of art.
